Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday that puts any country selling oil to Cuba in his tariff crosshairs. It's part of what he's framing as a pressure campaign against Havana, but Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel sees it differently: He's calling it economic suffocation.

Fighting Words from Havana
Diaz-Canel didn't hold back on social media, blasting the policy as unjust and groundless. He said it puts Cuba's survival at risk by going after nations that trade with the island. His language got heated, labeling the approach "fascist, criminal and genocidal"—a swipe apparently aimed at Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who's been a persistent Cuba critic.
The timing stings. Cuba's already dealing with brutal economic conditions, including fuel shortages that have led to chronic blackouts. The government points to shrinking oil imports as the main culprit behind deteriorating daily life. Cuba's foreign minister went so far as to declare an "international emergency," framing Washington's moves as an existential threat. Venezuela also condemned the penalties on Friday.
Spillover Worries
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum raised concerns about the humanitarian fallout, warning that choking off oil supplies could create serious suffering for Cuba's population. She pledged her government would look for ways to support ordinary Cubans.
In Havana, residents are voicing frustration and anxiety over worsening conditions. People are reporting spoiled food, constant power outages, and climbing costs that make basic necessities increasingly out of reach.
