Here's some news that'll brighten your day—or at least your electric bill. Utility companies across America are asking regulators for a jaw-dropping $31 billion in rate increases this year, according to a recent study from PowerLines, a nonprofit that advocates for utility customers.
That's more than double the $15 billion utilities requested in 2024. So what changed? The answer is hiding in server farms across the country: AI data centers operated by major tech companies are consuming electricity at previously unimaginable rates.
Some of these rate hike requests are still working their way through approval processes, but many have already gotten the green light and will start showing up on customer bills throughout 2025. The South is getting hammered particularly hard, with utilities in the region seeking over $14 billion in increases. Florida Power and Light alone accounts for a massive chunk of that—its $9 billion rate hike request has been largely approved.
