President Donald Trump is signaling he might pull immigration enforcement officials out of Minneapolis at some point, even as he doubles down on calls for stricter nationwide immigration enforcement. It's a curious mixed message that comes as protests escalate following a controversial shooting in the city.

Reviewing the Minneapolis Incident
Speaking with The Wall Street Journal on Sunday, Trump declined to say whether the federal officer's actions were justified in the shooting. "We're reviewing everything and will come out with a determination," he said.
The president criticized Alex Pretti, who was killed by a federal Border Patrol agent on a Minneapolis street, for carrying a gun during protest activity. "I don't like any shooting...But I don't like it when somebody goes into a protest and he's got a very powerful, fully loaded gun...," Trump stated.
On the question of ICE presence in Minneapolis, Trump suggested withdrawal might happen eventually. He praised the agents' work and added, "At some point we will leave." But there's no timeline attached to that statement. The president commended his administration's actions in Minnesota and noted, "We'll leave a different group of people there for the financial fraud."
Demanding Cooperation and Legislative Action
Through a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump urged Democratic governors and mayors to cooperate with his administration on immigration enforcement. His demands include transferring incarcerated undocumented criminals to federal authorities, mandatory cooperation by local police with federal agents, and assistance in apprehending undocumented individuals wanted for crimes.
Trump also pressed Congress to pass legislation to "end" sanctuary cities, arguing that stricter enforcement and cooperation are necessary to improve public safety and reduce crime.
Political Fallout Intensifies
The Minneapolis shooting has sparked a national debate on immigration enforcement and gun rights. Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) warned the situation could lead to a civil war, underscoring how heated the political climate has become.
Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), are threatening a partial government shutdown by blocking funding for the Department of Homeland Security over the incident.
Earlier this month, the Justice Department initiated a criminal investigation into Minnesota officials, including Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, for allegedly obstructing immigration agents. The investigation stems from statements Walz and Frey made about the deployment of thousands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and Border Patrol agents to the Minneapolis region under Trump's orders.
