Trump Takes Aim at Canada's China Deal
President Donald Trump isn't holding back on Canada's latest trade move with China. In a post shared by Transport Secretary Sean Duffy on X this Sunday, Trump called out Canada's electric vehicle trade agreement with China as nothing short of disastrous.
"Canada is systematically destroying itself," Trump declared. He went further, describing the deal as "one of the worst deals, of any kind, in history." Trump also claimed Canadian businesses are relocating to the U.S., though he didn't offer specifics. Despite the harsh words, he added: "I want to see Canada SURVIVE AND THRIVE!"
So what's in this deal? Canada agreed to allow up to 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles into the country at a reduced tariff of just 6.1%. It's a significant concession that's clearly caught Trump's attention.
The 100% Tariff Threat
Trump didn't stop at criticism. He's threatening real consequences: "If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A," he warned.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back during a Sunday press briefing, insisting the deal aligns with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Secretary Duffy isn't buying it, warning Canada will "live to regret" allowing Chinese-made EVs in. The concern isn't limited to politicians either. Ford Motor Co. (F) CEO Jim Farley has also raised alarms about Chinese-made electric vehicles.
