Here we go again. The U.S. government just emerged from its longest shutdown ever—43 days starting in November 2025—and now we're staring down another one this weekend. President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday, "We're probably going to end up in another Democrat shutdown," and the prediction markets are taking him seriously.

The Smart Money Says It's Happening
Bettors on Kalshi, a federally authorized prediction market platform, have put their money where their mouths are. Over $8 million has been wagered on whether the government shuts down Saturday, January 31. As of now, the odds sit at 76.8%—up a whopping 38.4 percentage points. That means only about 24% of bettors think we'll avoid a shutdown.
The catalyst? Senate Democrats announced they're blocking funding for the Department of Homeland Security following a fatal shooting involving U.S. Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday morning.
Schumer's Strategic Play
Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is calling on Senate Republicans to pass the broader government funding package while stripping out DHS money to avoid a partial shutdown. He's made it crystal clear that Senate Democrats "will not allow" the current DHS funding bill to pass, though he's urging both parties to collaborate on the other five funding bills.
The opposition is growing. Multiple Senate Democrats who previously voted to reopen the government have now flipped. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) both told NBC News they won't vote for the DHS funding bill.
So much for smooth sailing in Washington.
