Things are getting tense in the Middle East, and not in a subtle way. As American warships make their way toward the region, Iran's Revolutionary Guard has decided this is the moment for some very pointed language.
Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, who commands Iran's Revolutionary Guard, announced on Saturday that his forces are "more ready than ever, finger on the trigger," according to the Associated Press. That's not exactly diplomatic speak, and it came as a direct response to the US naval movements.
Nournews, a media outlet with close ties to Iran's Supreme National Security Council, reported that Pakpour warned both the United States and Israel against making any strategic mistakes.
"The Islamic Revolutionary Guards and dear Iran stand more ready than ever, finger on the trigger, to execute the orders and directives of the Commander-in-Chief," the outlet quoted him as saying.
So what's driving all this? Tensions have been building since late December following a two-week crackdown on protests in Iran that began on December 28.
President Donald Trump has drawn two clear red lines for potential military action: the killing of peaceful protesters or mass executions of people arrested during the demonstrations. Trump also explained that the US is positioning warships near Iran "just in case" he decides to take action.
The situation has gotten serious enough that it's affecting commercial aviation. At least two European airlines have suspended or delayed flights to the region. Air France cancelled two round-trip flights from Paris to Dubai over the weekend, while Luxair pushed back its Saturday flight from Luxembourg to Dubai by 24 hours, according to the AP.
The flight disruptions underscore how real the risks have become for international travel and commerce. When airlines start rerouting or canceling flights, it's a sign that the threat assessment has shifted meaningfully. The international community is watching closely to see how this develops in the coming days.
