Running a mining company is complicated enough without your project site becoming the center of a geopolitical tug-of-war. That's exactly the situation facing Critical Metals Corp (CRML) CEO Tony Sage, whose rare earths operation in Greenland has placed him squarely in the middle of escalating tensions between the United States, the European Union, and Greenland's push for independence.

Walking a Diplomatic Tightrope
In an interview with Fortune on Tuesday, Sage explained his delicate balancing act: maintaining good relationships with the Trump administration, the EU, and Greenland's local government while trying to stay neutral. "I don't want the company to be a political football," he said.
Despite the diplomatic distractions swirling around him, Sage is keeping his eye on operations. His focus remains on the Tanbreez mine, which he believes could fundamentally reshape the rare earths market. The mine's high concentration of rare earths, particularly heavy rare earths, could reduce China's stranglehold on the market from approximately 97% to 50% within three years. That's a significant shift in a sector where China has maintained near-total dominance.
Still, Sage acknowledges reality. If the current political situation escalates further, project delays are inevitable. His preferred outcome? An independent Greenland with robust US military presence, potentially determined through an independence referendum. He called it "the best of both worlds."
Project Progress Amid Geopolitical Chess
The business fundamentals continue moving forward. Critical Metals now controls 92.5% of Tanbreez, with preconstruction and pilot work currently underway. Full construction is slated to start in 2027 and wrap up in 2028.
The Tanbreez project has attracted considerable attention as the US intensifies efforts to secure rare earth supply chains essential for defense, transportation, and technology applications. Earlier this month, Critical Metals reported strong assay results from its 2025 drilling campaign at the site. The company also announced deployment of a high-tech mobile lab designed to accelerate assay turnaround times in Greenland.
Meanwhile, the political landscape grows more complex. The US and EU are actively competing for influence in the region, with America making aggressive moves to strengthen its Greenland position. President Donald Trump announced a framework for an agreement with Denmark on Wednesday, which reportedly includes updates to the 1951 Greenland Defense Agreement while still recognizing Danish authority over the territory.
Market Performance
Investors have been paying attention. Over the past year, Critical Metals stock has surged 101.98%. The stock traded 5.5% higher in Thursday's pre-market session, bouncing back from an 11.07% decline on Wednesday.
