French President Emmanuel Macron has a pitch for global investors: forget the chaos and drama elsewhere, Europe is where the grown-ups still run things.

Europe's Case For Predictability
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, Macron framed Europe as "a place where rule of law and predictability is still the rule of the game." His argument? Markets are sleeping on stability. In a world that feels increasingly unpredictable, knowing that contracts mean something and laws actually apply might be worth more than anyone realizes.
"Having a place like Europe…which is predictable, loyal and when where you know that the rule of the game is just the rule of law, it's a good place," Macron said in remarks he shared on X.
He laid out an agenda for 2026 focused on reforms, investment, and defense spending. "We have to invest much more," Macron said, adding that Europe needs to build a "much stronger and more autonomous" foundation anchored in law, security and economic stability.
In a post on X, he distilled his worldview: "We prefer science to conspiracy theories, rule of law to rule of force, dialogue to threats."
Then things got interesting. Macron reshared a post from xAI's Grok, the AI chatbot created by Elon Musk's company, and added: "Even Grok agrees." The Grok post had responded to a user asking the AI assistant to weigh in on Macron's preferences for science, law and dialogue. It's worth noting that "Ask Grok" is an AI feature on X that provides real-time answers directly in the platform.
European Leaders Rally Around Independence
Macron wasn't alone in his messaging. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on X that geopolitical shocks should push Europe to strengthen its independence across security, the economy, defense, and democracy, and that progress is already accelerating.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda participated in a Davos panel titled "Redefining Europe's Place in the World." He warned that Europe is at a decisive crossroads, facing war on the continent, shifting transatlantic relationships, and intensifying global competition. His message: unity and urgent action are essential.
California Governor Joins The Fray
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom took his own shots at President Donald Trump during the forum. Newsom criticized European leaders for what he called appeasement, saying diplomacy doesn't work with Trump. He posted that Trump was heading to Davos "to brag about wrecking the American economy," and said he made the trip to Switzerland to position California as an alternative to Trump's "world disorder."
Both Macron and von der Leyen pushed back hard against Trump's tariff threats, insisting Europe wouldn't be intimidated and that imposing tariffs between allies is fundamentally misguided.
