California's License Battle Heats Up
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy took to social media Sunday with sharp words for California's political leaders. The issue? California is considering revoking driver's licenses for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, a move Duffy sees as putting "ILLEGAL immigrants over American citizens."
In his post on X, Duffy called out both Governor Gavin Newsom and Rep. Eric Swalwell, accusing them of prioritizing the wrong people. He pointed to what he called a glaring inconsistency: Newsom won't "revoke over 17,000 commercial trucking licenses issued ILLEGALLY to foreign drivers," yet Swalwell wants to strip licenses from federal agents to "prevent them from doing their jobs!"
"California's leadership puts Californians last once AGAIN," Duffy declared.
Federal Funding Already on the Line
This isn't just tough talk. Duffy previously announced he's withdrawing nearly $160 million in federal funding from California over the commercial driver's license controversy. Minnesota faces similar heat, with over $30 million in federal funding potentially suspended after Governor Tim Walz's administration allegedly issued CDLs to undocumented drivers.
ICE Under Fire From Multiple Fronts
ICE is catching criticism from several Democratic leaders beyond California. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez highlighted that over "70% of people" detained by ICE lack criminal records, challenging President Donald Trump's enforcement promises. Governor Walz questioned whether ICE operations have any "verifiable" evidence of "making America safer," comments that drew swift condemnation from the Trump administration.
Duffy Takes Aim at Canada Too
In separate news, Duffy also criticized Canada's decision to allow Chinese-made EVs into its market. He announced a 6.1% tariff on the first 49,000 EVs from Chinese automakers entering the country, warning Canada would "live to regret" opening its doors to Chinese vehicles.
