The Invitation Wave
At least eight additional countries have confirmed receiving invitations to join the board, an international body designed to oversee Gaza's next chapter following the ceasefire that started on Oct. 10, according to AP News.
Beyond Hungary and Vietnam, India, Australia, Jordan, Greece, Cyprus and Pakistan have all reported receiving letters from the White House, based on official statements and government sources.
In his letters to world leaders, Trump framed the Board of Peace as an opportunity to "embark on a bold new approach to resolving global conflict." The invitations outline the board's role as a founding group tasked with guiding ceasefire implementation, overseeing Hamas disarmament, and managing reconstruction efforts.
Who's Saying Yes
Several world leaders took to X to announce their invitations publicly.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Hungary accepted its spot as a founding member, characterizing the invitation as recognition of Hungary's ongoing peace efforts.
Ambassador Sergio Gor posted that he was honored to deliver President Trump's invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pitching the Board of Peace as a group meant to bring lasting peace to Gaza while supporting stable governance and prosperity in the region.
Argentine President Javier Milei called receiving the invitation an honor, adding that Argentina backs countries fighting terrorism and promoting peace.
Turkish official Burhanettin Duran noted that the U.N. Security Council supported Trump's Gaza plan and that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received an invitation to join the Peace Council as a founding member.
The Pushback
Not everyone is impressed. MP for Islington and former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn posted on X, calling Trump's Board of Peace a "Board of Occupation." Corbyn argued that Gaza's future should be decided by Palestinians, not Trump, Tony Blair, or Benjamin Netanyahu.
American diplomat Dan Shapiro took aim at the board's draft charter, pointing out that it ignores Gaza itself, demands $1 billion per country for permanent membership, and gives Trump lifetime control plus the power to appoint his own successor. Shapiro predicted other governments won't accept those terms.
Meanwhile, Israel's Prime Minister's Office issued a statement saying the announcement about the Gaza Executive Board, which reports to Trump's Board of Peace, wasn't coordinated with Israel. They went further, stating the announcement runs contrary to Israel's policy.
