Things are getting awkward in Washington over Greenland. Anthony Scaramucci, the former White House communications director who now works as an investor, dropped an intriguing nugget on social media Sunday: Republican senators have apparently told President Donald Trump that invading Greenland would get him impeached and removed from office. Scaramucci called this development "encouraging."

When Your Own Party Says "Absolutely Not"
It's not just Scaramucci talking. Several Republican lawmakers have reportedly been telling colleagues that a military invasion of the Danish territory would constitute an "illegal war of aggression" and could trigger impeachment proceedings, even with Republicans controlling Congress.
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) told Politico Friday that members from both parties would "lock arms" to demand congressional approval if Trump looked ready to launch military action. "If there was any sort of action that looked like the goal was actually landing in Greenland and doing an illegal taking … there'd be sufficient numbers here to pass a war powers resolution and withstand a veto," Tillis explained.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) went even harder, predicting impeachment would follow such a move. He told the Omaha World-Herald last Wednesday that Trump's Greenland fixation was "the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
Leadership Sounds the Alarm
Republican leaders aren't holding back either. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said last Thursday that "there's certainly not an appetite here for some of the options that have been talked about or considered." Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) warned that using force against a US ally would be "an unprecedented act of strategic self-harm" that could "incinerate" NATO alliances.
Tariffs Make Everything Worse
The backlash intensified after Trump announced new tariffs on Denmark and other European allies opposing US control of Greenland. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) called the tariffs "unnecessary, punitive, and a profound mistake," warning they were already forcing NATO partners to divert attention and resources toward the Arctic dispute.
A wide range of voices, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), former national security adviser John Bolton, Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), and Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.), have criticized Trump's tariff threats over Greenland. Their argument: this fractures NATO and hands strategic advantages to Russia and China.
Trump's position remains that Greenland is vital to American national security because of its Arctic location, mineral resources, and the long-standing US military presence at Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base.
