President Donald Trump is calling for Iran to find new leadership, directly challenging Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's nearly four-decade grip on power. The statement marks a notable evolution in Trump's approach to the country's escalating crisis.
The call comes as protests across Iran have been winding down, though not before resulting in thousands of deaths in recent weeks. Trump had previously threatened military action and encouraged Iranians to continue their demonstrations and "take over institutions."
"It's time to look for new leadership in Iran," Trump told Politico.
But here's where things get interesting. Trump actually commended Khamenei for deciding not to execute more than 800 people two days earlier. When pressed about potential U.S. military operations in Iran, Trump said, "The best decision he ever made was not hanging more than 800 people two days ago."
The comments came in response to aggressive posts from Khamenei blaming Trump for inciting deadly violence and chaos in Iran. Trump fired back, criticizing Tehran's leadership for relying on suppression and violence to stay in power. He went further, calling Iran "the worst place to live anywhere in the world because of poor leadership."
Khamenei had earlier posted on X: "We find the US President guilty due to the casualties, damages and slander he inflicted upon the Iranian nation."
