The robotaxi race is heating up, and Chinese autonomous vehicle company WeRide Inc. (WRD) just hit a significant milestone that puts it squarely in the conversation with industry heavyweights.

Breaking the 1,000-Vehicle Mark
WeRide announced Thursday on social media that its global fleet has reached 1,023 robotaxis, a noteworthy achievement for a company competing against much larger rivals. More impressively, the company is now running fully driverless operations in three cities: Beijing, Guangzhou, and Abu Dhabi.
But WeRide isn't stopping there. The company says this milestone is just a stepping stone toward its ambitious goal of deploying "tens of thousands of Robotaxis by 2030." That's a bold vision in an industry where scaling up has proven trickier than many initially expected.
Strategic Partnerships Fuel Growth
WeRide is making smart moves to expand its reach. The company recently announced integration with WeChat, the ubiquitous Chinese messaging app backed by Tencent Holding Ltd (TCEHY) that boasts over a billion users. Through this WeRide Go integration, WeChat users can now book robotaxi rides in Guangzhou and Beijing, instantly giving the service access to a massive potential customer base.
On the international front, WeRide is partnering with Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER) and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority to launch robotaxi service in Dubai through the Uber app. It's a savvy approach that leverages existing platforms rather than trying to build everything from scratch.
The Competition Landscape
WeRide's progress comes as Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) (GOOG)-backed Waymo unveiled its latest robotaxi at CES 2026. The new vehicle, called "Ojai," features a minivan-like design equipped with 3 cameras, 6 radar sensors, and 4 LiDAR sensors. Waymo is also making aggressive moves, seeking over $10 billion in funding at a $100 billion valuation.
As of November 2025, Waymo operates over 2,500 vehicles globally and is planning an expansion into London this year. That's more than double WeRide's current fleet size, though the Chinese company is catching up quickly.
Tesla's Robotaxi Reality Check
Meanwhile, Tesla Inc. (TSLA) missed CEO Elon Musk's target of launching driverless robotaxi operations in Austin, Texas by the end of last year. That's become a familiar pattern for Tesla's autonomous vehicle promises.
Still, Tesla bulls remain optimistic. Investor Dan Ives continues to predict that the EV maker will eventually capture up to 80% of the robotaxi market, though that projection looks increasingly ambitious given the competition's steady progress.
The robotaxi market is shaping up to be a genuine three-way race, with WeRide's expansion showing that being first to market doesn't guarantee dominance in autonomous vehicles.
