In one of the more unusual diplomatic gestures of the year, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado handed over her Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Donald Trump on Thursday during a White House lunch. The move signals her determination to shape how Washington approaches Venezuela's political future now that President Nicolás Maduro is out of the picture.

A "Wonderful Gesture" That Trump Plans to Keep
Trump wasted no time celebrating the moment. In a Thursday evening post on Truth Social, he wrote, "Maria presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you Maria!"
According to Reuters, Machado described the meeting as "excellent" and said the gift recognized Trump's commitment to the freedom of the Venezuelan people. A White House official confirmed that Trump intends to keep the medal, which makes for quite the addition to the Oval Office trophy case.
The timing is notable. Machado's outreach comes after Trump declined suggestions that she be installed as Venezuela's leader following the U.S. capture of Maduro in what officials called a "snatch-and-grab" operation earlier this month. And there's a bit of history here: Trump aggressively lobbied for the Nobel before Machado received it last year and publicly complained when he was passed over.
The Medal Is Real, But the Title Stays With Her
Here's where things get technical. While Machado handed over the actual gold medal that comes with the prize, the Nobel Peace Prize title itself remains hers. The Norwegian Nobel Institute has been clear that the award cannot be "revoked, shared, or transferred to others." They reiterated this clarification after Trump and Machado floated the idea of sharing the honor.
When reporters asked Trump on Wednesday if he wanted her to give him the prize, he responded, "No, I didn't say that. She won the Nobel Peace Prize." The Republican president has long connected his Nobel ambitions to diplomatic achievements, including cease-fire deals and his aggressive stance on Caracas.
Building Influence Across Washington
Thursday's lunch, which lasted just over an hour, marked their first face-to-face meeting, according to the Associated Press. But Machado didn't stop there. She later sat down with more than a dozen Republican and Democratic senators, where lawmakers say she has generally found warmer support than inside Trump's inner circle.
Machado, who fled Venezuela in a secretive sea escape last December, is now competing for Trump's attention against figures inside Venezuela's government, including interim President Delcy Rodríguez. She's angling for a role in whatever transition comes next. Opposition activists and U.S. allies across Latin America are hoping Maduro's removal will create space for legitimate elections, though analysts caution that Venezuela's path to democratic revival is anything but certain.
