What do a tech billionaire philanthropist and a controversial Republican congresswoman have in common? Five stocks, as it turns out.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has become one of the most closely watched members of Congress for stock trading activity, largely because her portfolio has delivered strong returns over the years. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates, meanwhile, ranks among the world's wealthiest individuals and oversees a substantial stock portfolio through the Gates Foundation Trust.

Despite their vastly different public personas and investing scales, their portfolios intersect in five notable places.

Where The Portfolios Overlap

Data from Greene's disclosed trades since 2021 and third-quarter filings from the Gates Foundation Trust reveal five shared positions, each with its own story about how these two investors approach the same stocks differently.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-B): This is the heavyweight of the Gates Foundation Trust, currently representing about 30% of the entire portfolio with 21,765,224 shares held at the end of the third quarter. The trust has been trimming its position over time, but Warren Buffett's conglomerate remains the dominant holding by a wide margin.

Greene, operating on a completely different scale, has bought Berkshire shares six times in 2025 alone, adding to several purchases made throughout 2024.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT): Once the top holding for Gates, Microsoft now accounts for roughly 13% of the trust and ranks as the fourth-largest position. The trust held 9,191,207 shares valued at $4.8 billion at the end of the third quarter.

Greene's most recent Microsoft purchase came in October 2025, with multiple buys throughout this year and 2024. All of her transactions fell within the $1,000 to $15,000 range that characterizes most of her trading activity.

Caterpillar Inc. (CAT): The industrial equipment giant occupies the fifth spot in the Gates Foundation Trust with 6,353,614 shares worth approximately $3 billion at the end of the third quarter, representing about 8.3% of the trust's assets.

Greene bought Caterpillar most recently in May 2025, marking her sixth purchase of the year in her typical $1,000 to $15,000 range. Her interest in the stock extends back to 2021.

Walmart Inc. (WMT): The retail behemoth ranks as the eighth-largest holding in the Gates Foundation Trust at roughly 2.4% of assets. The trust owned 8,390,477 shares as of the third quarter.

Greene's last Walmart purchase came in May 2025, with several earlier buys dating back to 2021.

FedEx Corporation (FDX): The logistics company rounds out the shared holdings as the ninth-largest position in the Gates Foundation Trust, representing about 1.5% of assets at the end of the third quarter.

Greene bought FedEx stock most recently in August 2025, with five total purchases in 2025 and several additional buys in 2024.

Two Very Different Approaches

The similarities largely end with the stock tickers themselves. Greene has stated that a portfolio manager handles all of her trades, and she's previously dismissed criticism about the timing of certain purchases. Earlier this year, she faced scrutiny for buying numerous stocks shortly before President Trump announced a pause on tariffs that sent markets surging.

Her trading activity typically involves transactions in the $1,000 to $15,000 range, often concentrated in large-cap technology companies. Recent disclosures also show she's been picking up some stocks trading near 52-week lows, suggesting a value-oriented strategy at times.

The congresswoman recently announced her future resignation, which could bring an end to her public trading disclosures.

The Gates Foundation Trust operates at an entirely different magnitude. With stakes in 23 stocks and total assets of approximately $36.6 billion as of the third quarter, the trust was founded by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. Both Bill Gates and Warren Buffett continue making contributions to the trust, which is managed by Cascade Asset Management Company.

The foundation's investment approach ties directly to its philanthropic mission. The trust makes grants and strategic investments aligned with the focus areas of its co-founders, with returns funding ongoing charitable efforts around the world.

So while Greene and Gates might own the same five stocks, they're playing entirely different games with very different stakes.
