Tutor Perini Corporation (TPC) announced Monday it's been awarded a design change order worth approximately $53 million for Honolulu's City Center Guideway and Stations Project. The contract expands the company's existing role by authorizing design work for an extension of the current rail line.
Here's what's happening: Tutor Perini will design a new segment that extends the rail line from its current terminus, connecting the Kakaʻako neighborhood to Ala Moana. The scope includes planning for two additional stations along the route. It's essentially the preliminary work that sets up the company to potentially handle construction down the line.
The Real Money Comes Later
The interesting part is what this could lead to. Tutor Perini made it clear that the $53 million is just the starting point. If the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation secures additional funding and greenlights construction of the extension toward Ala Moana, the total contract value could grow substantially. The company said it expects significant additional funding as future construction work for the extension gets awarded.
Translation: this design contract is the appetizer, and the construction work would be the main course.
The project fits into Honolulu's broader push to build out its rail transit system, aiming to improve connections between urban neighborhoods and major commercial districts. For a city dealing with notorious traffic congestion, better rail connectivity isn't just nice to have.
