AECOM (ACM) just landed a major role in what might be the most significant water infrastructure project in Scottish history. The engineering giant announced Tuesday that it's been selected as a preferred bidder for Scottish Water's Enterprise Alliance, which is essentially a multi-billion-dollar makeover of Scotland's entire water and wastewater infrastructure.
This isn't just another contract. Scottish Water is calling the Enterprise Alliance its most significant investment to date, spanning up to 13 years and covering everything from drinking water systems to wastewater treatment. Think of it as Scotland deciding to future-proof its plumbing on a national scale.
AECOM will serve as one of two Primary Designers for the alliance, meaning they'll be responsible for design work across the entire program and making sure everything gets delivered efficiently. The core initiative runs from 2027 to 2033, though work kicks off in 2026, and there's an option to extend the program by another six years if needed.
Richard Whitehead, chief executive of AECOM's Europe and India region, said the company's enterprise-style delivery model "sets a new benchmark for the industry." He emphasized that the approach enables closer collaboration and greater efficiency while tapping into AECOM's technical expertise and engineering-led AI capabilities to improve certainty on complex capital programs.
