The United States just turned up the heat on Venezuela in a pretty dramatic way. Over the weekend, the Coast Guard intercepted and seized an oil tanker in international waters off Venezuela's coast, marking one of the sharpest escalations yet in Washington's campaign to strangle Nicolás Maduro's oil export machine.

How the Seizure Went Down
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed Saturday that Coast Guard forces had seized a vessel that had previously been docked in Venezuela. The operation wasn't subtle. Backed by the Navy's USS Gerald R. Ford, US forces boarded the Panama-flagged tanker (identified as both the Centuries and the Skipper in different reports) under a federal seizure warrant tied to sanctions violations.
"The United States will continue to pursue the illicit movement of sanctioned oil that is used to fund narco terrorism in the region," Noem said. "We will find you, and we will stop you."
Shadow Fleet Operations Exposed
White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly described the tanker as "a falsely flagged vessel operating as part of the Venezuelan shadow fleet to traffic stolen oil and fund the narcoterrorist Maduro regime."
The vessel was reportedly hauling about 2 million barrels of heavy crude, with some shipments bound for Cuba. Officials say the operation was connected to an illicit Iran-Venezuela oil network, with ties to Iran's Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah. The tanker had previously sailed under the name M/T Adisa.
Venezuela Cries Foul
Unsurprisingly, Venezuela didn't take this well. The government denounced the seizure as a "serious act of international piracy," claimed the crew went missing, and vowed to report the incident to the United Nations Security Council and other international bodies.
President Donald Trump confirmed the operation and made clear the US plans to keep the crude oil on board. It's a bold move that signals the administration isn't messing around when it comes to enforcing sanctions on the Maduro regime.
