Kevin O'Leary, the Shark Tank star better known as Mr. Wonderful, has a secret weapon for building wealth: his wife telling him "no." And he thinks that simple ability to resist buying things might be the entire difference between getting rich and staying broke.

The Unglamorous Truth About Getting Wealthy
O'Leary shared his wife's financial wisdom on X this past Sunday, and it wasn't exactly romantic. "One financial rule my wife made me follow? I can hear her now: 'Don't buy that. We don't need it.' It's not romantic, but it's the truth," he wrote.
The investor emphasized that this kind of restraint is what actually separates wealthy people from everyone else. "Most people don't get rich because they can't say no," he added, pointing to self-control as the foundation of long-term financial success.
O'Leary's Blueprint for Building Real Wealth
This isn't the first time O'Leary has preached financial discipline. Earlier this month, he called out what he considers the biggest money mistake: buying a house that's too big because emotions took over. His rule? Keep your mortgage under a third of your income, or you'll end up "house poor" and constantly stressed about money.
He's also focused on building what he calls a $5 million nest egg that you never touch. The idea is to live off the income it generates and only dip into the principal during genuine emergencies. O'Leary frames this advice specifically for entrepreneurs and side-hustlers, making it clear that discipline and restraint, not flashy spending, determine who actually achieves long-term financial success.
