Some NBA rivalries play out on the hardwood. Others? They're pure executive suite drama. The decade-long feud between Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and Daryl Morey—currently president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers—falls squarely in the latter category, complete with personal digs, strategic mind games, and one truly unexpected comparison to Donald Trump.

How It All Started
The bad blood traces back to 2013, when Morey, then GM of the Houston Rockets, made the audacious move of inquiring about Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki's availability. Cuban wasn't amused. His revenge came swift and satisfying: in 2014, he successfully recruited Chandler Parsons away from Houston, a move he celebrated as a personal victory.
Morey fired back at Cuban's philosophy of prioritizing raw talent over team chemistry. "If the money's equal between the Rockets and Mavericks, I think players are picking Houston. Every time," Morey declared confidently, according to the Basketball Network. He also criticized Cuban for dismantling the core of Dallas's 2011 championship team to cut costs—a strategic choice that clearly still rankles.
The Trump Comparison That Raised Eyebrows
Cuban's response was characteristically colorful. He compared Morey to President Donald Trump, though not in the way you might expect. "The only reason I'm even responding is because I respect and like Daryl, who's smart. He's got some Donald Trump in him where he doesn't really understand media all that well, but he's a smart guy and one of the smartest general managers in the league. So we can have some fun going back and forth," Cuban explained.
Translation: Morey might stumble with public relations, but he's brilliant at his job. It's the kind of backhanded compliment that keeps feuds interesting.
Why This Still Matters
More than a decade later, both executives remain influential figures in professional basketball. Cuban continues as part-owner of the Mavericks, while Morey now guides the 76ers' basketball operations. Their ongoing rivalry illuminates a fundamental tension in NBA management: the eternal struggle between acquiring elite talent and building cohesive team chemistry.
These aren't just personal squabbles—they represent different philosophies about how to build winning franchises. The strategic decisions and interpersonal dynamics between league executives shape the NBA's landscape as much as any buzzer-beater or championship run. And sometimes, those decisions come with a side of very public shade-throwing.
