Sometimes the internet delivers exactly what you ask for, and you still don't want it. That's what happened in May 2020 when J.K. Rowling, creator of the Harry Potter universe, made the mistake of asking Twitter to explain Bitcoin (BTC).

A Simple Question That Broke the Internet
On May 15, 2020, after being tagged in a Bitcoin-related post, the British novelist posted what seemed like an innocent question: "I don't understand Bitcoin. Please explain it to me."
What followed was a tsunami of cryptocurrency evangelism. Thousands of responses flooded in from enthusiasts eager to convert a literary icon into a Bitcoin believer.
Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin jumped in with a straightforward pitch: "It's a digital currency. There's ~18m units of it. It's not backed by anything, it's just valuable because it is, like collectibles."
Tron (TRX) founder Justin Sun tried a different approach, leaning into Rowling's own creation. He described Bitcoin as a "magic coin" which "Dumbledore" doesn't understand, but "Harry Potter" is fascinated by. Points for creativity, at least.
Not Convinced
Despite the best efforts of crypto's brightest minds, Rowling wasn't buying it. Her response was delightfully blunt: "I don't think I trust this."
She doubled down with even more clarity: "Things like this are white noise to me. I cannot and will not ever understand Bitcoin, but I love you for thinking that I can or will."
Even Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk weighed in, arguing that "massive" currency printing by central banks was making Bitcoin internet money look "solid." Still, Rowling's interaction remained brief, skeptical, and entirely free of any cryptocurrency endorsement.
The Price of Skepticism
Here's where it gets interesting. Bitcoin has risen 933% since those posts went live. Whether Rowling missed out on a fortune is something only she can decide, but the numbers tell a striking story.
| Cryptocurrency | Price (May 16, 2020) | Price (Current) | Gains |
| Bitcoin | $9,377 | $96,879.51 | 933.161% |
To this day, Rowling has never publicly changed her stance or advocated for cryptocurrency. Sometimes even the most persuasive voices in tech can't overcome a simple "no thanks." And honestly, there's something refreshing about that.
