World Liberty Financial (CRYPTO: WLFI) has a new plan to buy back its own token, and the timing is not subtle. The announcement landed Nov. 6, right after Democrats swept Congress in the U.S. midterm elections.
In an X post that day, the project said the buyback is meant to encourage governance participation and strengthen voting power among committed long-term token holders. Initial purchases would be funded through an allocation that may include fees generated from reserves backing its USD1 stablecoin, along with other funding sources.
Trader MEK noted that the proposed WLFI buyback links stablecoin growth to governance token value. The long-term impact, per MEK, will depend on consistent implementation and stronger governance participation. No initial purchase date or allocation size was disclosed.
This is not World Liberty's first rodeo with buybacks. In September 2025, when WLFI started trading publicly, the company launched a buyback-and-burn program.
Will Trump's Political Setback Affect WLFI?
WLFI declined 8% amid a broader selloff in Trump-linked cryptocurrencies after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress. The election outcome also brings renewed attention to the Trump family's financial interests in World Liberty Financial.
Trump and his sons co-founded the venture alongside business partners before the 2024 presidential election. An entity affiliated with the family, DT Marks DEFI LLC, owns almost 38% of World Liberty's holding company, according to company disclosures.
Trump's crypto-related ventures reportedly generated $1.4 billion last year, including $594 million from World Liberty sales. Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest involving the president's crypto investments and his administration's regulatory policies.
