A Chinese maker of industrial adhesive tapes just turned its founders into billionaires, but the bigger story may be what it makes and whom it competes with. Crown New Materials supplies materials used across electronics, electric vehicles and semiconductors, putting it in the same competitive conversation as 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) and Japan's Nitto Denko.

The Business Behind the IPO Frenzy
Crown New Materials shares surged as much as 787% on its Shenzhen debut on Nov. 3, turning its chairman and his sister into paper billionaires. The company, founded in 2000, makes industrial-grade adhesives, electronics-grade adhesives and functional films — materials that help hold components together, protect delicate surfaces and support manufacturing processes.
Its prospectus names Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Huawei Technologies among its consumer electronics customers, while Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), BYD Co., Ltd. (OTC:BYDDF) (OTC:BYDDY) and CATL are part of its automotive and battery customers. These are disclosed customer relationships, although the company does not establish that every named company buys directly from it or disclose the revenue contribution of each.
The appeal is easy to understand: investors are looking beyond the finished smartphones, cars and chips to the less visible materials needed to manufacture them.
Why 3M Is Part of the Story
Crown explicitly identifies 3M and Nitto Denko as global competitors. That makes the comparison more than a superficial resemblance between two adhesive makers.
3M's business spans industrial adhesives and tapes, electronics materials, automotive applications and semiconductor manufacturing. Its 2025 filing reported $2.27 billion in sales from industrial adhesives and tapes alone, while its broader Transportation and Electronics segment generated $8.27 billion.
Crown, meanwhile, generated 3.41 billion yuan (~$510 million) in revenue in 2025, up from 2.90 billion yuan (~$434 million) in 2023. But its profit growth has been considerably slower: net profit increased from 278 million yuan (~$41.64 million) in 2023 to 309 million yuan (~$46.25) in 2025.
More recent figures offer a reason for caution. Crown expects first-nine-month 2026 revenue to grow 9.12%-10.73%, while net profit could range from flat growth to a 7.98% decline. Higher material costs and trade tensions have weighed on profitability, according to its disclosures.
The Bigger Question for Investors
Crown's debut does not establish that it is taking market share from 3M. The companies differ substantially in scale, product breadth and geographic reach. But its emergence highlights a competitive shift worth watching: Chinese manufacturers are seeking a larger role in the specialized materials that underpin global electronics and automotive supply chains.
For 3M investors, the question is whether Crown and other Chinese suppliers can move beyond lower-cost manufacturing into higher-value applications where reliability, technical expertise and customer qualification matter.
Watch Crown's margins, product mix and repeat business, alongside 3M's electronics and industrial materials growth. A spectacular IPO is one thing; proving that it can compete profitably with an established global supplier is another.
