Grassroots protest movement Tesla Takedown is celebrating a win by the Democratic Party against Elon Musk's efforts to influence the midterm elections with $474 million.
The effort isn't over, with Tesla Takedown calling for Musk to testify before Congress to be held accountable for his efforts with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Tesla Takedown Celebrates Musk's Loss
Musk donated $474 million, the New York Times reported, to support Republican candidates in 2026, including individual races for senators, representatives and governors.
This includes $215 million donated in the U.S. Senate race for Ken Paxton against James Talarico, which Paxton lost. Another $5.5 million was donated to help support Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost his race.
Musk was the largest donor for the 2026 midterm elections according to Tesla Takedown.
Of the races backed by Musk, the majority lost on Tuesday.
"The people have spoken: it's time to get billionaire money out of politics," an email from Tesla Takedown said.
With more than $1 billion spent in the 2024 and 2026 elections, Musk has tried to influence the outcomes with his money.
"Americans are catching on: Elon Musk is a loser. The world's richest man spent nearly $1 billion over the past two cycles trying to buy our democracy, but tonight voters rejected his power grab."
The grassroots protest movement says that despite Musk saying he would spend less on political campaigns, he did the opposite.
"That's a mistake America can't afford to make again. The Tesla Takedown movement never stopped fighting Elon's power grab, and it's going to take all of us to thwart his continued attempts to hijack our democracy."
Tesla Takedown has in the past encouraged consumers to not buy Tesla Inc. (TSLA) vehicles or to sell existing ones, unless Musk is no longer associated with the company.
Efforts Turn to DOGE Investigation
Musk was previously involved with the Department of Government Efficiency under President Donald Trump. That's the next focus area of Tesla Takedown and where it believes the newly elected Democratic-majority Congress should focus.
"Tonight, voters overwhelmingly rejected Elon Musk's corruption," Tesla Takedown said in an email.
Tesla Takedown said Americans are "fed up with corruption" and people like Musk who are "trying to buy political power."
"Like his involvement in these elections, Musk's DOGE was a complete disaster and he needs to be held accountable."
The group alleges that DOGE destroyed federal agencies, gutted regulation, exposed sensitive personal data and costs Americans money.
"The calls for Musk to testify before Congress are only growing louder, and we intend to keep the pressure on. Voters have done their part. Now it's Congress' turn."
Tesla Takedown shares the InvestigateDOGE website, which includes quotes and pledges from members of Congress who want to investigate Musk's past actions with DOGE.
Newly elected U.S. Senator Abdul El-Sayed (D-Mich.) recently said that Musk should be held accountable.
"I think it's worth reviewing a lot of the way that [the U.S. DOGE Service] happened and asking how much of that was actually legal and understanding what that is," El-Sayed told Scientific American.
A Democratic majority could likely mean that Musk could face congressional hearings moving forward.
President Donald Trump suggested he could pardon Musk, which could limit some of the legal challenges against the billionaire.
