Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) had itself a busy conference weekend. The healthcare giant rolled out positive clinical trial results for two investigational cardiovascular devices at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference in San Diego, and both came with the kind of numbers that make cardiologists sit up straight: high procedural success, low complication rates, and a pair of patient populations that are notoriously tough to treat.

Amulet 360: One Year, Almost No Leaks
First up is the Amulet 360 Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Occluder. Data from the pivotal VERITAS study, released Monday, showed the device achieved complete closure with zero-millimeter leak in 96.3% of patients evaluated by transesophageal echocardiography. That is a fancy way of saying the implant sealed the heart's little appendage pocket tight, with no blood sneaking around the edges.
The device targets non-valvular atrial fibrillation, an irregular rhythm in the upper heart chambers. For patients who cannot tolerate long-term blood-thinning medication, this offers a therapeutic alternative: plug the spot where clots like to form, and maybe skip the warfarin.
Abbott built the platform on existing occlusion technology, adding a softer, more conformable lobe to fit diverse patient anatomies plus an outer disc that provides a secondary sealing layer. Think of it as a custom-fit stopper with a backup gasket.
Through one full year of follow-up, more than 98% of treated individuals remained free from ischemic stroke, systemic embolism, and cardiovascular-related mortality. Over 99% avoided pericardial fluid buildup requiring intervention, and 93.4% experienced no major bleeding events. Those are the kind of stats that make a device feel less like an experiment and more like a plan.
SonicForce: Breaking Up Calcium With Sound Waves
Then there is the SonicForce Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy System. In a related Sunday release, Abbott announced favorable 30-day outcomes from the TECTONIC Investigational Device Exemption study, which evaluated the device across 335 patients with severely calcified coronary artery disease.
The system uses acoustic pressure waves, similar to how kidney stones get treated, to fracture hard calcium deposits inside narrowed vessels. The study hit its primary effectiveness benchmark with a 97% procedural success rate and recorded a low 30-day target lesion failure rate of 0.3%.
Key secondary metrics looked just as clean. Post-lithotripsy stent placement reduced remaining vessel blockage to under 50% across all evaluated participants, with major adverse cardiovascular events limited to 0.3%. Optical coherence tomography in a 106-patient sub-study confirmed calcium fractures and improved post-stent expansion. In plain English: the sound waves cracked the calcium, the stent went in smoothly, and the vessels stayed open.
ABT Price Action: Abbott Laboratories shares were up 2.55% at $108.91 at the time of publication on Monday, according to market data.
