Palihapitiya Questions Sustainability of Memory Boom
Social Capital founder Chamath Palihapitiya recently raised concerns about whether the memory industry's extraordinary profit growth can continue. Palihapitiya highlighted Micron's fiscal 2026 revenue of $133.2 billion, up from $37.4 billion in fiscal 2025. The company's GAAP gross margin reached 80.7%, compared with negative 9% in fiscal 2023. However, Palihapitiya warned that expanding production capacity could threaten the industry's profitability. Memory manufacturers are investing heavily in new factories, with additional capacity expected between 2027 and 2029. He also pointed to rising competition from China's CXMT, whose global DRAM revenue share reportedly increased from 4% to 10% within a year. Palihapitiya questioned whether artificial intelligence demand has fundamentally changed the memory business or whether rising inventories and new supply could trigger another downturn.
Technical Analysis
Micron remains in a longer-term uptrend, trading approximately 21% above its 200-day simple moving average of $746.83. However, the stock trades 4.7% below its 20-day SMA of $950.61 and 7.4% below its 50-day SMA of $978.71, signaling weaker near-term momentum. The moving average convergence divergence indicator remains below its signal line, with a negative histogram suggesting fading buying pressure. Key resistance stands at $1,042.50, while immediate support is near $902.50. A move above resistance could strengthen the recovery, while a break below support could signal further weakness. Micron's 52-week range of $192.59 to $1,255 highlights the stock's substantial volatility.
Analyst Outlook
The stock carries a consensus Buy rating and an average analyst price forecast of $1,622.38. Rosenblatt maintained its Buy rating and $1,900 price forecast on Oct. 22, while Needham reiterated its Buy rating and $1,650 forecast the same day.
ETF Exposure
Micron holds significant weightings in several exchange-traded funds, including the Invesco S&P 500 Momentum ETF (NYSE:SPMO) at 8.73%, State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (NYSE:XNTK) at 8.25% and Pacer Data and Digital Revolution ETF (NYSE:TRFK) at 8.47%. These exposures could amplify trading activity as ETF inflows and outflows influence demand for Micron shares.
MU Price Action
Micron shares gained 2.35% to $905.49 in Monday's premarket trading, according to market data.
