The biggest election-driven stock moves may not come from the industries dominating campaign headlines. With control of Congress at stake in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, investors in energy and defense stocks have another variable to watch: how the next Congress could reshape tax incentives, project approvals and federal spending priorities.

Energy Policy Puts CEG in Focus

Constellation Energy Corp. (CEG) offers a direct link between Washington's energy priorities and corporate earnings. The company operates nuclear power plants, making federal support for nuclear generation an important consideration for investors assessing its long-term outlook.

Under current law, Constellation's nuclear facilities can qualify for production tax credits through 2032, according to its 2025 annual report. Changes to energy policy could influence the economics of nuclear power, particularly as electricity demand from data centers adds urgency to discussions about reliable, around-the-clock power.

That does not mean the midterms will automatically change existing incentives. However, the election could influence the congressional environment surrounding future energy legislation, regulatory oversight and support for new nuclear projects.

NextEra Faces a Different Policy Test

NextEra Energy Inc. (NEE) offers a contrasting exposure through its renewable-energy investments and regulated utility operations. Federal tax credits, permitting requirements and rules governing wind and solar development can influence the cost and timing of projects, making policy implementation an important factor for the company.

In its 2025 annual report, NextEra discussed changes to clean-energy tax provisions and federal reviews of permitting and approvals for wind and solar projects. The company also said it believed its current pipeline of wind and solar facilities scheduled through 2030 would qualify for clean-energy tax credits.

For investors, the distinction is between an immediate change in business fundamentals and the uncertainty surrounding future rules. The election could affect the direction of energy oversight, but project economics, electricity demand and execution will remain central to NextEra's performance.

Defense Spending Keeps LMT on the Radar

Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) brings a different kind of policy exposure. The defense contractor generated 72% of its 2025 sales from the U.S. government, including 63% from the Department of Defense, according to its annual report.

That makes federal budget decisions, military procurement priorities and the timing of contract funding important variables for the company. A change in congressional control could influence oversight and spending negotiations, although defense contracts and appropriations do not automatically change with election results.

For investors, the next catalyst is how election results translate into actual policy, budgets and project approvals. Watch congressional negotiations alongside company order backlogs, contract awards and earnings guidance: those developments will help establish whether political uncertainty is becoming a meaningful change in business prospects.
