SSA Corrects Nearly 15% Of Active Social Security Records
"Pay off your house. Retire on Social Security. For years, that was the deal," Warren wrote on X. "But homes are out of reach, and Social Security is being squeezed."
"We must lower housing costs and protect Social Security. I'm doing everything I can to secure a stable retirement for all Americans," the Senator wrote.
The Social Security Administration said it has corrected nearly 15% of active Social Security number records since the beginning of the Trump administration, calling it the "most comprehensive SSN record clean-up in the agency's 91-year history."
The agency added 17 million dates of death to records that lacked them and updated about 25 million records missing citizenship information. It is working to correct another 8.5 million records with inaccurate citizenship status.
The SSA said the effort aims to improve database accuracy, help government agencies verify identities, and prevent improper payments.
Social Security Faces Potential 22% Benefit Cuts
The announcement follows Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano's interview, in which he said the agency had identified 30 million erroneous records and cleaned up about 10% of them.
However, the records cleanup does not resolve Social Security's long-term funding challenges.
The program's main trust fund is projected to deplete its reserves in 2032, when continuing income could cover 78% of scheduled benefits, potentially resulting in a 22% reduction if Congress does not act.
