Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) has a new idea for holding the Trump administration accountable, and it comes with a name that sounds like it was borrowed from a prestige TV drama: the "Truth and Accountability Commission."
On Monday, in a post on X, Khanna said he was introducing the commission to hold the Trump administration and the Trump family accountable for alleged crimes.
"No one is above the law," Khanna wrote.
In a video accompanying the post, Khanna criticized Trump's approach to law enforcement and called for a focus on evidence of wrongdoing before identifying those responsible.
"Donald Trump says, show me the person and I'll show you the crimes," he said. "We're going to flip the script."
He added, "Show us the crimes and we will hold the people who did this accountable."
The Bill and What It Would Investigate
Khanna introduced a bill to establish the commission to investigate alleged abuses of power by the Trump administration, including the Iran war, alleged personal enrichment involving Trump and his family, reported The Hill.
The commission would also examine unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files, uses of force by ICE and Border Patrol officers, federal employee firings and funding freezes.
It would comprise 11 members selected through a process involving the president, congressional leaders and state attorneys general.
The Money Question
Last week, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Trump family profits could have funded a year of SNAP benefits for 1.3 million people or more than 600 million free school lunches.
She accused the family of corruption at taxpayers' expense and called for accountability.
In June, a Reuters investigation found that the Trump family had generated at least $2.3 billion from four crypto ventures since returning to the White House, while more than 1 million investors suffered comparable losses.
Eight ethics experts raised conflict-of-interest concerns over the family's crypto profits while the administration regulated the industry.
Democrats Have Been Promising This Fight
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) vowed Democrats would investigate Trump, his family and associates if they won the House, promising to "hold the crooks accountable."
Democrats planned hearings, subpoenas and document demands involving Trump-linked businesses and foreign money.
Whether any of this actually happens depends, as always, on who controls the gavels. But Khanna is putting a marker down, and the name of the game is accountability. Or at least the commission for it.
