Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) took a swing at President Donald Trump's economic record, arguing that stubborn inflation and high costs have undercut the prosperity Trump promised.
On Sunday, Pritzker aimed at Trump's economic agenda in a post on X, accusing the president of failing to deliver on promises he made during the 2024 presidential campaign.
"Donald Trump promised to defeat inflation, bring down prices, and reignite explosive economic growth in 2024," Pritzker wrote.
"The reality? Inflation is still rising, costs are too high, and instead of you feeling the 'Golden Age,' only the well-connected are," he added.
Trump's First 100 Days: Campaign Promises Scorecard
Trump's first 100 days of his second term saw mixed progress on his 2024 campaign promises.
He advanced immigration restrictions, imposed tariffs, signed an executive order targeting transgender participation in women's sports and pardoned more than 1,500 people, including Jan. 6 Capitol attack defendants.
However, his pledges to end the Russia-Ukraine war, lower grocery prices and deliver tax cuts, including no taxes on tips and overtime pay, remained unfulfilled or in progress.
Debt, Inflation and Wealth Concerns
Last week, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) called for sweeping federal spending cuts and a balanced budget as the national debt exceeded $40 trillion, arguing that government-funded benefits led to higher taxes, rising debt and fewer opportunities.
SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci argued that rising property prices created an illusion of wealth as inflation eroded purchasing power.
He noted that his childhood home, which his parents bought for $16,000 in 1962, was valued at $783,000, but its value measured in gold fell from 450 ounces to 250 ounces.
Earlier this month, the U.S. government recorded a $1.992 trillion budget deficit in fiscal 2026, with net interest payments of $1.052 trillion surpassing the $965 billion spent on national defense.
Moody's Analytics Chief Economist Mark Zandi warned that the deficit, which exceeded 6% of GDP, was pushing the country toward a "fiscal reckoning."
U.S. annual inflation rose to 3.7% in September, while gasoline prices jumped 9.1% from August and were up 34.2% from a year earlier. Core inflation rose to 2.6%, remaining above the Federal Reserve's 2% target.
