Symbotic Inc. (SYM) announced Tuesday that it has acquired Germany-based automation company cellumation GmbH, expanding its AI-powered warehouse robotics capabilities and strengthening its presence in Europe.
The acquisition adds cellumation's patented celluveyor technology to Symbotic's portfolio. The software-driven system aims to improve warehouse efficiency, increase processing capacity and reduce space requirements.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
AI-Powered Technology Could Cut Warehouse Costs
Cellumation's celluveyor platform uses hundreds of independently controlled cells that move products in any direction. Unlike traditional conveyor belts, the system uses software to direct products to their destinations.
Symbotic expects the technology to increase throughput, handle a wider range of products and reduce the space needed for sorting operations.
The company also aims to simplify robotic systems, free up warehouse space and potentially lower equipment costs.
Chairman and CEO Rick Cohen said the acquisition would help customers improve performance, use warehouse space more efficiently and reduce system costs.
Symbotic Expands Automation Portfolio
The deal follows Symbotic's recent acquisitions of ARMS Innovations and Fox Robotics, further diversifying its automation offerings.
Cellumation's technology is already deployed across postal, e-commerce and logistics operations worldwide.
Symbotic plans to integrate the platform into its systems while continuing to sell it directly to customers and other automation providers.
Symbotic ended the third quarter of fiscal 2026 with $1.7 billion in cash and cash equivalents.
European Expansion Gains Momentum
Cellumation will retain its name and headquarters in Bremen, Germany, while continuing to serve its global customer base.
Co-founder and CEO Hendrik Thamer and co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Claudio Uriarte will remain with the company.
Thamer said joining Symbotic would provide the resources and scale needed to accelerate cellumation's global expansion.
The acquisition also gives Symbotic access to established European customer relationships, regional expertise and an experienced local leadership team.
SYM Price Action: Symbotic shares were down 1.30% at $40.25 at the time of publication on Tuesday, according to market data.
