Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) (GOOG) Google is making a play for something wearable makers have long struggled to capture: the connection between daily habits and what is happening inside the body. Its new partnership with Function Health combines wearable signals with more than 160 lab tests, potentially giving Google a richer health picture, and a new way to keep users engaged across its devices and services.

Google Wants More Than Wearable Data
Announced Oct. 12, the partnership between Function Health and Google Health will let U.S. users share Function lab results with the Google Health app later this fall.
Google's ecosystem already tracks signals such as resting heart rate, sleep patterns, heart rate variability and cardio load through products including Pixel Watch and Fitbit devices. Function adds another layer: biological measurements wearables cannot directly capture, including cholesterol-related markers, fasting insulin, inflammation indicators, hormones, and nutrients.
Together, they could help users see how changes in sleep, exercise, and nutrition correlate with changes in their lab results over time. Google says those results, alongside personal health records, will also inform tailored guidance through Google Health Coach.
The distinction is important. A wearable can flag changes in sleep or heart rate, but lab results can add context about metabolic or cardiovascular health. Together, the data could make Google's health app more useful than an activity-metrics dashboard alone.
Apple Is Already Expanding Its Health Platform
Google is not entering an uncontested market. Apple Inc. (AAPL) announced its own major Health app overhaul in September, adding AI-powered insights, a longevity dashboard and the ability to purchase lab tests covering more than 50 biomarkers through Quest Diagnostics. Users can also import existing lab results.
The difference is in how the ecosystems are being assembled. Google is partnering with Function to bring more than 160 lab tests and its Medical Intelligence platform into Google Health. Apple is combining its own software, Apple Watch data, clinical records and lab services inside its existing device ecosystem.
That makes this a competition over more than health metrics. Both companies are trying to turn fragmented information into personalized guidance that users return to regularly.
The Bigger Prize Is Engagement
For Alphabet, a more useful health app could strengthen engagement with Google's wearables and health services. More personalized guidance may give users a reason to keep tracking their routines, while potentially making Google's devices more attractive to health-conscious consumers.
But the partnership does not automatically create a durable competitive advantage. Function results will become shareable in the U.S. later this fall, and the commercial impact will depend on adoption, the quality of the insights and whether users keep coming back.
Privacy is another consideration. Health information is particularly sensitive, and users must trust how platforms handle their biological data before sharing it.
Investment takeaway: Google's Function partnership gives Alphabet another way to deepen its health ecosystem, but Apple is expanding its own capabilities at the same time.
Investors should watch adoption and sustained engagement, not simply the number of lab tests integrated.
