Members of Congress keep trading stocks, and we keep watching. Sometimes the timing works out beautifully. Sometimes it really, really doesn't.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) recently disclosed selling Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ: AMAT) shares, as shown by the MarketDash Government Trades page. The transaction involved selling $1,000 to $15,000 in AMAT stock on Sept. 15.
Gottheimer also bought $1,000 to $15,000 of AMAT shares back on August 6.
On August 6, Applied Materials stock traded between $511.05 and $539.50. Assuming the full $15,000 was used to buy AMAT shares, Gottheimer could have bought 27.80 to 29.35 shares.
Those shares sold on Sept. 15 for between $11,585.93 and $12,620.21, a loss of 22.8% to 15.9%.
Applied Materials stock has since rallied.
If Gottheimer had held the shares and sold today, the loss would be 5.7% to 0.5%, based on a share price of $508.61 today.
