AST SpaceMobile Inc. (ASTS) plunged 15.4% at one point on Friday as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX) expanding satellite-to-phone ambitions intensified competitive concerns. But for investors holding the Procure Space ETF (UFO), the sell-off presents an interesting picture. The fund owns both companies, with SpaceX accounting for more than three times ASTS's portfolio weight.
UFO is down 0.38% as of publication on Friday.
AST SpaceMobile represents 4.86% of the ETF's portfolio, compared with 16.73% for SpaceX. A 15.4% decline in ASTS would mean an estimated 0.75-percentage-point drag on UFO, assuming its portfolio weights remain unchanged and all other holdings are flat.
Meanwhile, SpaceX's substantially larger allocation means its stock performance could have a greater influence on the fund's return.
The ETF Math Behind the Satellite Showdown
The portfolio-weight calculation illustrates how company-specific volatility can affect a thematic ETF.
The calculation is simple: ASTS's 4.86% weight multiplied by its 15.4% decline produces an estimated 0.75-percentage-point contribution to UFO's return. This is just an illustration, not the ETF's actual daily performance.
Why SpaceX's Expansion Matters
The Federal Communications Commission authorized SpaceX to deploy a 15,000-satellite Starlink Mobile constellation, strengthening its push to connect ordinary mobile phones directly to satellites.
That strategy could challenge AST SpaceMobile's carrier-dependent business model. Further uncertainty surrounds FCC proposals involving spectrum access and a potential 25-megahertz auction for bands that could support direct-to-device services.
The implications for UFO, however, are not one-sided. SpaceX's larger portfolio weight means gains in its shares could potentially offset some ASTS-related losses, while weakness across other satellite holdings could deepen the damage.
What ETF Investors Should Watch
UFO also holds companies such as Rocket Lab Corp. (RKLB), EchoStar Corp. (ECHO) and Viasat Inc. (VSAT). Their performance matters because the fund's return reflects its entire portfolio, not just the battle between ASTS and SpaceX.
UFO's portfolio turns the ASTS sell-off into a relative-exposure story. ASTS's decline creates a measurable drag, but SpaceX's much larger allocation could prove equally important in determining the fund's direction. Investors should watch both holdings' daily returns before concluding whether UFO is benefiting from the competitive shift or getting caught in the crossfire.
