Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST) dropped its fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results after Thursday's closing bell, and the numbers did what Costco numbers usually do: they beat. Top line, bottom line, both. But here's the thing about a company that beats expectations so reliably. Eventually the market stops rewarding you for the beat and starts asking what you've done for it lately.

Inside the Costco Q4 Numbers
Costco reported quarterly earnings of $6.75 per share, which beat the consensus estimate of $6.52 by 3.53%, according to market data.
Quarterly revenue came in at $95.72 billion, which beat the Street estimate of $94.86 billion and was up from $86.16 billion in the same period last year.
Net sales for the quarter increased 11.2%, to $93.9 billion, from $84.4 billion last year.
COST Stock Price: According to market data, Costco stock was up 0.22% to $898.92 in Thursday's extended trading.
The Peer Group Is Running Circles Around Costco
This peer comparison is based on a curated set of retail stocks selected for this analysis: Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT), Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG), Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR), BJs Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: BJ), and PriceSmart Inc (NASDAQ: PSMT).
Over the past year, Costco Wholesale fell 4.96%, trailing the peer-group average gain of 32.03% by 36.99 percentage points. It also trailed all five individual peers: Target (+77.51%), PriceSmart (+48.38%), Dollar Tree (+18.53%), Dollar General (+17.46%) and BJs Wholesale (-1.71%).
Read that again. Costco, the warehouse club that people treat as a religion, is the worst performer in its own peer group over the past twelve months. Target, which has spent the last few years being the retail industry's cautionary tale, is up 77.51%. The market, it turns out, does not care about your food court hot dog pricing.
The Chart Is Not Your Friend Right Now
Costco is trading below all major trend gauges, sitting 1.6% under its 20-day SMA and 6.4% below its 200-day SMA, which keeps the longer-term bias pointed lower. The 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA, and the 50-day SMA remains below the 200-day SMA — a Death Cross that formed in August and often signals that bounces may be corrective until price can reclaim those longer averages.
MACD is the cleaner momentum read right now: it's below its signal line and the histogram is negative, which suggests upside pressure is cooling versus the prior upswing. In plain terms, when MACD is under its signal line, momentum is typically fading unless buyers can push price back into a stronger trend phase.
The chart also has clear reference points from the past year: a swing high in July and a swing low in September, with the 52-week high of $1,096.50 in May 2026 and the 52-week low of $844.06 in December 2025.
With the stock still down 4.96% over the past 12 months and below its longer-term averages, traders will often look for either a higher low to form — or a decisive breakdown that forces a new round of de-risking.
- Key Resistance: $978.50 — Nearby ceiling where rebounds can stall, sitting closer to the stock's overhead moving-average zone.
- Key Support: $874 — Nearby floor near the lower end of the recent range, where buyers previously stepped in.
So there's the setup. A company that just beat on both lines, trading below every meaningful moving average, with a Death Cross on the books and a twelve-month performance that makes it look like the laggard of its own peer group. The fundamentals say one thing. The tape says another. That tension is the whole story right now.
