Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) stock fell more than 1% in Tuesday premarket trading after gaining 9.95% in the previous session. Traders took some profits near recent highs while weighing fresh signs that agentic AI could drive greater demand for CPU-heavy inference workloads.
Nasdaq futures were up 0.03%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.06%.
The stock is also trading near its 52-week high after a sharp rally. That can encourage investors to lock in gains, especially after Monday's nearly 10% advance.
However, investors are also watching a potentially important new AI demand driver.
AMD crossed $1 trillion in market value for the first time Monday after Meta Platforms Inc. (META) said its Muse personal AI agent ranked as the most-downloaded free iPhone app in the U.S. for three straight days, according to Sensor Tower.
The traction adds another data point to AMD's argument that agentic AI could expand demand for server CPUs.
Muse Traction Supports AMD's Agentic AI Thesis
AMD has argued that agentic AI workloads rely heavily on CPUs. AI agents often coordinate multiple tool calls and carry out multi-step logic between model invocations.
That workload structure could increase the amount of traditional computing needed alongside GPUs and other AI accelerators.
AMD expects the server CPU addressable market to grow about 50% by 2030 to roughly $220 billion.
Muse's early App Store traction therefore gives investors a real-world signal to watch. If AI agents gain broader adoption, rising inference activity could support stronger CPU demand across data centers.
Technical Analysis
AMD remains in a strong uptrend. The stock is trading 22.1% above its 20-day simple moving average of $497.87. It is also 70.4% above its 200-day SMA of $356.63.
Those gaps show strong momentum. However, they also suggest the stock is trading well above its longer-term trend.
AMD's relative strength index stands at 72.63. An RSI above 70 typically signals overbought conditions and can precede consolidation or a pullback.
Still, the moving-average structure remains bullish. The 20-day SMA is above the 50-day SMA, while the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day SMA.
The RSI moved into overbought territory in September. Meanwhile, the stock continued its latest leg higher after forming a swing low in July.
Key support: About $498, near the 20-day moving average and an area where buyers could look for support.
Analyst Outlook
AMD trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 157 times, reflecting the market's high growth expectations. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $604.
Recent analyst actions include Piper Sandler initiating coverage with an Overweight rating and a $600 price target on Sept. 10. Raymond James upgraded AMD to Strong Buy and raised its target to $641 on Aug. 25. BMO Capital initiated coverage with an Outperform rating and a $550 target on Aug. 21.
Momentum Scores and the Price of Growth
The MarketDash Edge scorecard highlights AMD's strong momentum, growth and quality scores.
AMD has a Momentum score of 99.26, a Quality score of 95.33 and a Growth score of 95.61.
However, its Value score is just 3.46. That reflects the premium investors are paying for AMD's expected growth.
Overall, AMD's Edge scores point to strong momentum and growth. However, its elevated valuation and overbought RSI could leave the stock more vulnerable to pullbacks.
Top ETF Exposure
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) has an 8.74% weighting in AMD. The First Trust Nasdaq Semiconductor ETF (FTXL) has a 6.79% weighting, while the Pacer Data and Digital Revolution ETF (TRFK) has a 6.52% weighting.
AMD's sizable weight in these funds means large ETF inflows or outflows can contribute to buying or selling pressure in the stock.
