Sometimes the market rewards you for simply being big. Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT) stock rose almost 2% Friday, outperforming the broader market as investors favored large-cap technology stocks. The Nasdaq gained 0.23%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.28%.

Applied Materials Plans $5 Billion India Investment

Separately, Applied Materials plans to invest $5 billion in India over the next decade as the country expands its semiconductor industry, Reuters reported Thursday.

The semiconductor equipment maker said the investment will focus on research, supply chain expansion and workforce development.

Applied Materials announced the investment at SEMICON India in New Delhi. The event drew more than 600 companies from 52 countries.

Technical Analysis

Applied Materials remains under pressure in the intermediate term. The stock is trading 5.7% below its 20-day simple moving average and 14.6% below its 50-day SMA.

However, it remains 2.7% above its 200-day SMA. That keeps a key long-term support level within reach.

Momentum remains weak. The MACD is below its signal line, while the histogram is negative. Both indicators suggest buying momentum has faded.

The moving averages also show a mixed setup. The 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA, signaling short-term weakness. However, the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day SMA, which supports the longer-term trend.

Key resistance sits near $474. A sustained move above that level could strengthen the rebound. Support sits near $426, close to the 200-day moving-average zone.

Analyst Outlook

Applied Materials carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $673.96.

UBS maintained a Buy rating and raised its price forecast to $695 on Sept. 1. Mizuho maintained an Outperform rating but lowered its forecast to $590 on Aug. 25. Argus Research maintained a Buy rating and raised its forecast to $600 on Aug. 18.

The stock trades at about 36 times earnings.
