"AI has now reached the point where AI is designing better AI," Hinton told reporters. "That's called recursive self-improvement. … It is going to get out of control unless we do something. We need to slow down," Hinton added, according to the report.
Hinton also referred to a recent AI incident as "a little Chernobyl." He was referring to the Hugging Face hack involving a swarm of OpenAI agents that accessed the internet, hacked the platform, and attempted to cover their tracks by deceiving humans about their actions, as per the report.

After the briefing, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said, "We are in the last minutes of being able to get some meaningful control over these agents" that are starting to "replicate themselves."
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said he hoped the AI Kill Switch Act, introduced with Rep. Nathaniel Moran, could come up this year. The legislation would require developers of powerful AI models to preserve technical powers to suspend or shut down their systems.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) blocked Kennedy's request on Wednesday to fast-track legislation on the AI "kill switch" bill.
