Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) stock rose nearly 3% in Thursday premarket trading as risk appetite improved alongside U.S. stock futures.
Nasdaq futures gained 1.05%, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.80%.
AMD's early move appears tied to broader strength in growth and technology stocks. Traders are leaning into upside momentum ahead of the opening bell.
However, AMD is already well above several long-term trend indicators. As a result, traders will watch whether buyers can push through nearby resistance or whether the rally loses steam.
Piper Sandler: AI Market Is 'Starving For Compute'
Recent analyst optimism also supports sentiment. Piper Sandler initiated coverage of AMD with an Overweight rating and a $600 price forecast on Sept. 10. The firm cited accelerating AI compute demand and AMD's growing position in server CPUs and GPUs.
Piper Sandler said the AI market is "starving for more compute capacity," with 2027 capacity already sold out and order books filling for 2028.
The analysts estimate the global compute market could reach $2.2 trillion by 2030, driven largely by AI accelerators. They expect that expansion to support strong revenue and earnings growth across major semiconductor suppliers.
Technical Analysis
AMD remains in a strong long-term uptrend. The stock is about 49.7% above its 200-day simple moving average of $351.29.
It is also 6.3% above its 50-day SMA of $495.03. That keeps the intermediate trend positive, although the stock could face pullback risk if momentum fades.
The short-term picture is more mixed. The 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA, signaling that the shorter-term trend has yet to fully strengthen.
Still, AMD is trading 9.1% above its 20-day SMA of $482.30.
Momentum is also improving. The MACD is above its signal line, while the histogram is positive. That suggests buyers are regaining momentum following the previous downswing.
AMD is trading near the upper end of its 52-week range of $149.85 to $584.73. A move above $530 could put the 52-week high back in focus. Meanwhile, the $463 area represents an important support zone if shares retreat.
Analyst Outlook
AMD trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 130.7, reflecting a premium valuation. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $604.
Piper Sandler initiated coverage with an Overweight rating and a $600 price forecast on Sept. 10. Raymond James upgraded AMD to Strong Buy and raised its price forecast to $641 on Aug. 25. BMO Capital initiated coverage with an Outperform rating and a $550 price forecast on Aug. 21.
MarketDash Edge Rankings
The MarketDash Edge scorecard shows AMD scoring strongly on momentum, quality and growth.
AMD has a momentum score of 98.93, a quality score of 94.21 and a growth score of 95.58. However, its value score is just 3.85.
The combination highlights AMD's strong growth and momentum profile while also pointing to elevated valuation risk. That could leave the stock more sensitive to weaker growth expectations or guidance.
