He added, "The bottom line: we are cooked, as an economy and a culture, if we leave it to the industry to protect us. They won't. They can't."

In a video shared alongside the post, Murphy discussed concerns raised by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who resigned after warning that AI companies were racing toward self-improving AI systems that could pose an existential threat.

Recursive AI Improvement Risks

Murphy focused on "recursive self-improvement," describing a potential scenario in which AI systems build increasingly capable versions of themselves until the technology "outruns our ability, humans' ability to control it."

He warned that millions of jobs could potentially disappear and that the technology could create "a national security crisis, an economic crisis, and a spiritual crisis all at once."

Murphy criticized efforts to limit government regulation of AI, arguing that companies face financial incentives to continue developing increasingly powerful systems.

"The companies are not going to protect us. They can't," he said. "As long as money is the only incentive, they will race to build the machine that could destroy us."

He called for "one set of rules that applies to every company," arguing that government oversight had previously helped manage risks in industries including nuclear power, pharmaceuticals and workplace safety.

AI Regulation Concerns Rise

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) urged Congress to strengthen AI oversight and called for a federal AI agency, mandatory insurance and strict liability for harmful AI models.
