Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump say a Russian businessman's lavish Bahamas celebration was simply a generous wedding gift, but the arrangement is drawing scrutiny because of his ties to President Vladimir Putin.

Russian Oligarch Bankrolled Bahamas Celebration
On Monday, in an Instagram post, Trump Jr. and his wife acknowledged that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev paid for a lavish post-wedding celebration for them and dozens of guests in the Bahamas in May.
Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, is under sanctions imposed by the Ukrainian government.
He has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on expenses related to the private-island festivities, including a fireworks show. The celebration began one day after the couple's wedding, according to ProPublica.
Bettina Trump said the event was simply a generous gesture from a friend.
"Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful," she wrote on Instagram in a post signed "Don & Bettina."
Trump Family Defends Lavish Gift
Bettina Trump said the Bahamas trip had been planned before the wedding as a weekend with friends. After their original wedding plans changed, she said, the couple decided to marry beforehand and attend the already-planned celebration as newlyweds.
She rejected suggestions that Kremlev's involvement had a political motive.
"Friendship doesn't require a political motive. Generosity doesn't automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift," she wrote.
President Donald Trump, who did not attend the wedding or Bahamas celebration, also downplayed the issue.
"I have no idea who Umar is, never heard of him," Trump told NBC News, adding that Kremlev "didn't pay for Don and Bettina's wedding" and that the Bahamas event was an "afterparty" in their honor.
Democrats Demand Answers
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, questioned what Kremlev expected in return.
"Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the President's son. What did he get in return? We need answers," Garcia wrote on X.
Hunter Biden also took a jab at Trump Jr.
In a post on X, he said, "Don Jr needed a Russian oligarch, two islands, and a fireworks show. I got married on the rooftop of an apartment building in West Hollywood. It was so much cooler."
