A top political adviser to President Donald Trump says Republicans have a real shot at keeping Congress in November, even with the political weather looking pretty rough.

James Blair, who stepped away from his job as White House deputy chief of staff in April to run Trump's outside political operation MAGA Inc., made the case on NBC News' podcast "Here's the Scoop: Election Edition," which aired Saturday.

Polling Signals Warning for GOP

"I won't predict how many seats are going to be in either chamber come November," Blair said. "But I do think there is a path for us to retain both majorities and defy history."

That path is not exactly paved with good news. A Quinnipiac University poll released Friday showed voters would rather see Democrats regain control of the House than Republicans if the midterms were held today.

The finding lands as Trump's approval ratings sink, with recent polling showing voters souring on his handling of the economy and the ongoing Iran war.

Turnout Strategy Takes Center Stage

Blair also pointed to local dynamics, saying, "There is a national backdrop against which things are being fought, and there are local considerations and sort of very specific considerations that a good campaign will be able to utilize both of." Trump urged RNC convention supporters in Dallas to vote and bring "friends and family to the polls."

On inflation, Blair said, "We're still cleaning up that mess, and we need more time to finish the job."

Separately, Trump said MAGA Inc. has raised about $850 million. He said he plans to spend "a lot" of that money to help Republicans win in November.
