Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) is reportedly gearing up to make a big push into women's health. The pharmaceutical giant is assembling specialists and researching new treatments for conditions like endometriosis and bone health, according to a Bloomberg report on Thursday.
The move is a classic case of using today's cash cow to fund tomorrow's growth engine. Lilly is tapping the substantial profits from its popular diabetes and weight-loss medications to finance its next major ventures. Historically, the company has focused on immunology, cancer, neuroscience, and cardiometabolic health. But recent hires and early-stage acquisitions point to a shift toward areas where the business can make a significant impact, such as emerging therapeutic platforms, psychedelics, infectious diseases, and now, women's health.
Building a New Portfolio
Lilly already maintains a substantial breast cancer division and previously developed prominent osteoporosis medications, including Evista and Forteo. The current strategy signals a broader commitment to conditions that traditionally receive less research attention, such as endometriosis and pregnancy-related disorders.
"Too many women's health conditions have gone under-researched for too long, and we are committed to broadening the women's health ecosystem and to advance science in areas of serious unmet need," Ruth Gimeno, group vice president of Cardiometabolic Health Research at Lilly, told Bloomberg.
Strategic Investments
Instead of immediately pursuing massive acquisitions, the drugmaker is cautiously establishing the necessary infrastructure and talent to ensure long-term success. The organization is also seeking external opportunities. It recently executed a $40 million strategic investment in Absci Corp. (ABSI).
Absci is currently designing an early-stage experimental therapy to block biological signals that cause the pain and lesions associated with endometriosis. As part of this partnership, the pharma giant secured a seat on Absci's endometriosis advisory board.
On Friday, Eli Lilly completed its acquisition of AtaiBeckley, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing rapid-acting neuroplastogens for mental health conditions.
LLY Stock Price Activity: Eli Lilly shares were down 0.39% to $1118.64 at the time of publication on Friday, according to market data.
