American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (AEO) reported its fiscal 2027 second-quarter results after Wednesday's closing bell, and on the surface, it looked like a solid quarter. The company beat expectations on both the top and bottom lines, thanks in part to a hefty tariff refund. But investors weren't impressed, sending shares down sharply in extended trading. Let's dig into the numbers.

American Eagle Q2 Details
American Eagle posted quarterly earnings of 79 cents per share, blowing past the consensus estimate of 21 cents, according to market data. Revenue came in at $1.38 billion, just above the analyst forecast of $1.37 billion.
But there are some wrinkles. Consolidated inventory at cost was up 14%, with units up 9%. That's a notable buildup that could signal slower sell-through or deliberate stockpiling ahead of tariffs. Total comparable sales rose 6%, while Aerie and OFFLINE total revenue jumped 25%, showing the company's portfolio strategy is paying off.
The big driver of the earnings beat was a $196 million tariff refund, which contributed $161 million to net operating income for the quarter. That's a one-time boost, so investors may be looking past the headline numbers to the underlying performance.
CEO Jay Schottenstein struck an optimistic tone: "The second quarter reflects the value of our AEO Inc. portfolio, led by the broad-based momentum of Aerie and OFFLINE, alongside encouraging progress at American Eagle."
Looking Ahead
For the third quarter and full fiscal year, American Eagle expects comparable sales to grow by mid-single digits. That's a modest outlook, and with inventory up 14%, some might worry about future markdowns.
As for the stock, it was down 11.78% to $14.98 in Wednesday's extended trading, according to market data. The market's reaction suggests that even with a big beat, investors are focused on sustainability and the health of the core brand.
