President Donald Trump has joined a very exclusive club: he's now the second sitting U.S. president to appear on American coinage during his lifetime. The U.S. Mint released a gold-colored $1 coin on Wednesday to mark the nation's 250th anniversary, and it's already causing a stir, both for its subject and the legal questions swirling around it.

Trump Coin Goes On Sale Nationwide
The Mint began selling the Semiquincentennial President Donald J. Trump $1 Coin on Wednesday. The obverse shows Trump's portrait beneath "LIBERTY" and above "1776 ~ 2026," while the reverse carries the Presidential Seal, with an eagle gripping arrows and an olive branch.
The Mint priced 25-coin rolls at $61 and 100-coin bags at $154.50. It also randomly inserted 250,000 coins struck July 4 with a special "July 4th" privy mark. The product quickly moved to backorder status.
Despite their circulating finish, the Mint says the Philadelphia-made coins "have never been placed into circulation." They remain legal tender and can be spent at face value.
Legal Questions Shadow Historic Coin Release
The release follows months of scrutiny. Treasury first floated a Trump $1 coin last year, including an early design showing him raising a fist beside the words "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT." The final version dropped that reverse image.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the revised $1 design in July, reigniting questions over whether federal rules allow a living president on coinage. The Presidential $1 Coin Act bars living presidents from that series, while another statute limits portraits on U.S. currency and securities to deceased individuals. The 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act, however, separately authorized Treasury to issue redesigned $1 coins in 2026 for the Semiquincentennial, and the Mint cites that authority.
The controversy also involved the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, which advises Treasury on designs. Committee member Donald Scarinci previously warned, "If they make it without our review, it will be illegal." The Commission of Fine Arts approved the design. AP noted its members were Trump appointees.
Coolidge Precedent Looms Over Trump Coin
The rollout also drew political criticism, with Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) previously asking Bessent, "Can you please focus on the economy?"
Trump told Fox Business in an interview in July that putting his image on a coin was "very unusual" but that he was "honored by it."
The historical precedent dates to 1926, when a commemorative half dollar marking America's 150th anniversary featured then-President Calvin Coolidge alongside George Washington.
