Rocket Lab Corp. (RKLB) shares slipped more than 1% on Wednesday, a move that stands out because the broader market was actually having a decent day. The Nasdaq edged up 0.06%, and the S&P 500 gained 0.36%. But Rocket Lab didn't get the memo, trading down while the indexes were green.

The Technical Picture Is Ugly
If you look at the charts, Rocket Lab is stuck in a long-term downtrend. The stock is trading 15.1% below its 20-day simple moving average, 17.8% below its 50-day average, and a hefty 21.5% below its 200-day average. That's a lot of distance to make up just to get back to where the trend turns neutral.
What's more, the 50-day average is still below the 200-day average, confirming the "death cross" that formed back in August. For those unfamiliar, a death cross happens when a shorter-term moving average crosses below a longer-term one, and it's often seen as a bearish signal. This pattern can put a ceiling on any rally attempts until the stock can reclaim those key averages.
Momentum indicators aren't offering much hope either. The moving average convergence divergence indicator, or MACD, is sitting below its signal line, and its histogram is negative. In plain English, that means buying momentum is fading, and there's no immediate sign of a reversal.
On the upside, resistance is hovering near $67.50. That level could cap any rebound before the stock even gets close to its short-term moving averages. On the downside, support is around $58.50. If that level breaks, the stock could be in for more pain.
Rocket Lab Keeps Launching
While the stock chart looks rough, the business itself is still humming along. On Wednesday, Rocket Lab announced it successfully launched its 94th Electron rocket from New Zealand. The mission deployed Synspective's latest StriX Earth-imaging satellite into low Earth orbit.
This was Rocket Lab's 15th launch of 2026, and it kept the company's perfect record with Synspective intact. Rocket Lab has 16 more Electron missions on the books to expand Synspective's satellite constellation by 2030. So, operationally, things are going well, even if the stock price isn't reflecting it right now.
What Wall Street Thinks
Despite the bearish technicals, analysts are still pretty bullish on Rocket Lab. The stock carries a consensus Buy rating, with an average price target of $110.71. That's a significant upside from current levels, assuming the stock can turn things around.
Recent analyst actions show a mix of confidence and caution:
- Bank of America Securities: Maintained a Buy rating but lowered its price target to $110 on Aug. 31.
- Citizens: Maintained a Market Outperform rating with a $130 price target on Aug. 11.
- Cantor Fitzgerald: Maintained an Overweight rating and raised its price target to $122 on Aug. 11.
So, the analysts see value here, but the market is clearly worried about the near-term trend.
Momentum Score Says Weak
On the MarketDash Edge scorecard, Rocket Lab has a weak Momentum score of 13.68. That low score reflects the stock's position well below its major moving averages. It's a reminder that the technical setup is challenging, and longer-term bulls might want to wait for the stock to reclaim some key levels before jumping in.
ETF Exposure Could Add Volatility
Rocket Lab is also a significant holding in several exchange-traded funds, which means ETF flows could influence the stock's trading activity. Here are the top funds with exposure:
- ARK Space & Defense Innovation ETF (ARKX): 5.70%
- ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ): 4.07%
- Defiance Space and Connective Tech ETF (UFOX): 4.04%
Given these sizable weightings, any inflows or outflows from these ETFs could add to the trading action in Rocket Lab shares.
Price Action
At the time of publication Wednesday, Rocket Lab shares were down 1.17% to $61.81, according to market data. The stock is in a tough spot technically, but with a strong launch record and analyst support, the story isn't over yet. It just might take some time for the charts to catch up.
