CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly used a trip to Moscow this week to float a bold idea: a three-way summit between President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The goal? To breathe new life into peace talks that have been stuck in the mud.

Ratcliffe's Moscow Trip Marks First Personal Push for Peace
According to Axios, which cited two sources briefed on the matter, Ratcliffe met with Russian intelligence chiefs Sergey Naryshkin and Alexander Bortnikov during an undisclosed Tuesday visit. This marks Ratcliffe's first hands-on involvement in the diplomatic effort.
U.S. officials reportedly briefed Zelensky on Friday about the proposed trilateral meeting. Trump has floated this idea before, and Zelensky has given it a thumbs-up, but Putin has so far said no, the sources said.
Trump told Axios that Ratcliffe's visit was "standard business," not a warning to Russia against striking NATO territory. Separately, The New York Times reported that Ratcliffe gave Bortnikov a "bleak assessment" of the war and urged Russia to strike a deal before its position worsens.
The CIA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump has previously met Putin in Alaska and Zelensky at the White House separately in bids to end the war, which began in 2022. But a three-way summit has yet to happen.
Deadly Strike Near Kyiv Underscores the Urgency
The proposal comes as a Russian drone strike killed at least 37 people overnight Friday in Myla, a village in Kyiv's Bucha district, officials said, marking one of the war's deadliest attacks this year.
Following the attack, Zelensky posted a video on X saying, "A criminal investigation is under way. All the facts must be established."
The timing of Ratcliffe's trip and the deadly strike highlight the high stakes. With peace talks stalled and violence escalating, the push for a summit may be the most serious attempt yet to find a way out.
