Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) shares slipped on Friday as investors digested the latest round of tariff chatter coming out of Washington. The stock was down about 1% in premarket trading, with the broader market barely moving. S&P 500 futures were up 0.04% at the time, so this wasn't a market-wide selloff. It was chip-specific anxiety.

Tariff Talk Spooks AI Hardware
The Trump administration is reportedly mulling new semiconductor tariffs that would go beyond just chips themselves. We're talking about tariffs on products that contain semiconductors, which includes everything from laptops and gaming consoles to the data center servers that power the AI boom.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is said to be a fan of linking tariff relief for foreign companies to commitments to invest in U.S. chip manufacturing. That's a classic carrot-and-stick approach, but it's got tech companies nervous.
The White House, for its part, is trying to downplay the reports, calling them "baseless speculation" unless there's an official announcement. Still, officials are reportedly considering a phase-in period, and tech companies are lobbying hard to soften the proposal.
Why the pushback? Higher duties could slow down AI data center construction by making it harder to source semiconductors. That's a direct threat to AMD's growth story, which is heavily tied to the AI infrastructure buildout.
Analysts Still Bullish on AMD
Despite the tariff overhang, Wall Street remains pretty upbeat on AMD. The stock carries a Buy rating with an average price target of $595.91. That's a decent chunk above where it's trading now.
Recent analyst moves include:
- Raymond James: Upgraded to Strong Buy, raising its forecast to $641.00 (Aug. 25)
- BMO Capital: Initiated with Outperform, forecasting $550.00 (Aug. 21)
- Argus Research: Buy, raising its forecast to $625.00 (Aug. 6)
So the sentiment is positive, but the market is clearly focused on the near-term risks.
ETF Exposure Could Amplify Moves
One thing to keep an eye on is AMD's heavy weight in several popular tech ETFs. For instance:
- iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX): 8.10% weight
- CoreValues America First Technology ETF (USMD): 7.74% weight
- ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW): 7.00% weight
That matters because if these funds see significant inflows or outflows, they'll have to buy or sell AMD shares automatically to maintain their weightings. That can amplify moves in the stock, for better or worse.
Price Action
As of Friday's publication, AMD shares were down 1.10% at $471.45. It's a modest decline, but it's a reminder that even the most promising AI plays aren't immune to policy headlines.
