Swvl Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SWVL) just got a serious vote of confidence. The mobility tech company announced Tuesday that it secured a $13 million private investment led by Coefficient LP, a firm backed by the Sawiris family. Investors liked the sound of that, sending the stock up nearly 50%.
Here's the breakdown: Coefficient is putting in $10 million, which will make it Swvl's largest institutional shareholder once the deal closes. An existing investor is chipping in the remaining $3 million. Swvl will issue about 8.99 million Class A shares at $1.446 each, and the transaction is expected to wrap up on Aug. 27, assuming all the usual conditions are met.
There's also a new face coming to the board: Abdalla Ali, Coefficient's founder and managing partner. That's a sign this isn't just a passive check; Coefficient wants a seat at the table.
So what's Swvl going to do with the cash? The company says it's earmarked for expanding its U.S. operations and launching a lending service for transportation operators and partners. It's also a balance sheet strengthener as Swvl chases multiyear enterprise and government contracts.
The timing makes sense. Swvl reported 68% year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter, with revenue hitting $8.2 million. Gulf Cooperation Council sales were even hotter, climbing 111%. Recurring revenue made up 88% of the total, and net dollar retention stood at 114%. Dollar-linked revenue represented 44% of the mix. Operating expenses dropped to 23% of revenue, which suggests the company is getting closer to that elusive operating breakeven.
CEO Mostafa Kandil framed the investment as a catalyst: it provides the capital and market connections needed to accelerate U.S. growth. Swvl serves businesses, governments, schools, and health care organizations across seven countries, using real-time data and adaptive networks to manage transportation services.
One thing to note: these securities are being sold through a private placement, so they haven't been registered under the Securities Act. Swvl has agreed to file a resale registration statement covering the shares, which is standard for this kind of deal.
As of Tuesday at publication time, Swvl shares were up 46.95% at $2.16, according to market data.
