Nvidia's AI ambitions go far beyond selling chips. The company recently revealed in its latest 13F filing that it holds a stake in Generate Biomedicines, a biotech with a bold long-term vision: making biology programmable.
In an exclusive email interview, Generate's co-founder and CTO Gevorg Grigoryan explained that the company was built on the belief that "machine learning can make biology programmable." For Generate, AI isn't an add-on tool; it's the core operating logic behind every step of its drug discovery platform.
From Educated Guesses to Machine-Scale Discovery
Grigoryan argues that AI is fundamentally changing drug discovery by flipping the scarcity of scientific hypotheses on its head. "What is fundamentally different in the age of AI is that hypotheses (educated guesses) become abundant and available at machine scale," he said.
To seize that opportunity, Generate pairs large-scale AI generation with equally large-scale experimentation, a strategy it calls "intentionality at scale." The platform rapidly generates potential drug candidates, validates them through experiments, and learns from the results. This loop lets the company test "orders of magnitude more intentional hypotheses" than traditional methods could ever manage.
According to Grigoryan, that continuous cycle ultimately boosts the probability of clinical success while helping deliver better medicines to patients. In other words, AI isn't just speeding up the process; it's making the whole endeavor smarter.
